This excerpted article is the closest description of my experience at last Saturday’s Restoring Honor rally at the Lincoln Memorial in our nation’s capital, Washington DC. I would only add that Glenn Beck, together with Sarah Palin, Dr. Alveda King and others, wanted us to also take away an affirmation on how important it is that we as Americans value Unity, Faith, Hope and Charity.
And Glenn Beck wanted us to take away another lesson about the reflecting pool – that not only is it situated on the Mall to physically reflect the majesty of the monuments that surround it, but that the pool is there to remind us to ‘reflect’ on the meaning of each those monuments.
“Pundits will debate whether the crowd at Glenn Beck’s Saturday rally in Washington was the largest in recent political history, but it was certainly among the most impressive.
One would not be able to find a more polite crowd at a political convention, certainly not at a professional sporting event, probably not even at an opera. In fact, judging by the behavior of the attendees following the event, you’d have a tough time finding churches in which people display more patience as others make their way to the exits.
This army of well-mannered folks that marched into Washington seemed comprised mainly of people who had once marched in the U.S. Army or other military branch, or at least had a family member who had. Perhaps that’s not surprising, given that the event was a fund-raiser for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides scholarships to the children of elite troops killed in the performance of their duty. The day was largely devoted to expressions of gratitude for the sacrifices of U.S. soldiers, for great men of American history like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and for God.
But it didn’t end there. Dave Roever, a Vietnam veteran, offered a closing prayer in which he thanked the Lord for the president and for the Congress. Despite the unpopularity of the latter two, no booing or catcalls could be heard. Relaxed young parents felt comfortable enough to push toddlers in strollers through the crowded areas along the memorial’s reflecting pool.
Not only was the rally akin to a “huge church picnic” (in one Journal reporter’s description), but one had to wonder if the over-achievers in this crowd actually left the area in better shape than they found it.
After the event, walking from the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool through Constitution Gardens, this reporter scanned 360 degrees and could not see a scrap of trash anywhere. Participants and volunteers had collected all their refuse and left it piled neatly in bags around the public garbage cans. Near Constitution Avenue, I did encounter one stray piece of paper — but too old and faded to have been left that day.
Given the huge representation of military families at the event, maybe it’s not surprising the grounds were left ship-shape. A principal theme of the day was that attendees should restore the country by making improvements in their own lives—be the change you wish to see in the world, as Gandhi once put it.
Most of the participants were strictly amateurs in the business of activism. For many, it was their first appearance at a public demonstration. Their strikingly mild-mannered nature might inspire even Mr. Beck to acknowledge that in a crowd estimated at 300,000 [actually, there were at least 500,000 attendees], the craziest person at the event might have been the one with the microphone. While he admits that he’s part entertainer and prone to over-the-top comments, his followers appear to be sincerely responding to his message that Americans need to cling to their best traditions.”
Glenn Beck’s Happy Warriors
You probably couldn’t have found a more polite crowd at the opera.

“We [Muslims] smile in the face of some people even though our hearts curse them.” – Abu Darda (companion of Muhammad)
Like me, are you often made uncomfortable by that Riddler-like sneer that president Obama too readily flashes? In the context of a current poll showing that a surprising and growing number of Americans (42% !!) believe that Obama is a Muslim, can anyone dispute the correlation between Obama’s creepy, almost diabolical, grin and the fact that the Koran instructs its followers to present a disarming demeanor toward non-Muslims through the artful use of lies and overtures of warm friendship (even marriage!) to attain Jihad, the total elimination of all infidels (non-Muslims). Islam even has a centuries-old term for this false front – Taqiyya
“…believers [Muslims] are allowed to show friendship outwardly, but never inwardly.” – Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Islam sanctioned commentary of the Koran)
The word “Taqiyya” (pronounced ‘tock-ee-yah”) literally means: “Concealing, precaution, guarding.” It is employed in disguising one’s beliefs, intentions, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions or strategies. In practical terms it is manifested as dissimulation, lying, deceiving, vexing and confounding with the intention of deflecting attention, foiling or pre-emptive blocking. It is currently employed in fending off and neutralising any criticism of Islam or Muslims.
Falsehoods told to prevent the denigration of Islam, to protect oneself, or to promote the cause of Islam are sanctioned in the Qur’an and Sunna, including lying under oath in testimony before a court, deceiving by making distorted statements to the media such as the claim that Islam is a “religion of peace”. A Muslim is even permitted to deny or denounce his faith if, in so doing, he protects or furthers the interests of Islam, so long as he remains faithful to Islam in his heart.
Like many Islamic practices, Taqiyya was formed within the context of the culture of Arab tribalism, expansionary warfare, Bedouin raiding and inter-tribal conflict. Taqiyya has been used by Muslims since the 7th century to confuse, confound and divide ‘the enemy’.
The higher one is placed in the social order (or rather, on how important the individual perceives himself to be), the more imperative it becomes to strenuously avoid “loss of face”. The male’s perceived loss of honour and status, must be redressed and his face “whitened”, i.e. his honour regained and restored, at any cost; even to the extent of (as in the honour killing of daughters) murdering the person “responsible” for causing the initial humiliation. When Taqiyya is used to avoid making an admission or concession it is simply an essential means of ensuring that ones honour and standing remain intact and untarnished.
Islamic spokesmen commonly use Taqiyya as a form of ‘outwitting’. The skilled Taqiyya-tactician doesn’t want the matter at hand to be debated or discussed; so his opponent must be outwitted or preemptively outflanked by the use of Taqiyya. The objective is to divert attention away from the subject through duplicity and obfuscation.
When placed under scrutiny or criminal investigation, (even when there is overwhelming, irrefutable evidence of guilt or complicity), the Taqiyya-tactician will quickly attempt to counter the allegation by resorting to the claim that it is, in fact, the accused who are the ‘the victims’. Victims of Islamophobia, racism, religious discrimination and intolerance. Currently, this is the most commonly encountered form of distraction and ‘outwitting’….. Defence by offence. Warner McKenzie ~ Understanding Taqiyya ― Islamic Principle of Lying for the Sake of Allah
“By Allah, and Allah willing, if I take an oath and later find something else better than that, then I do what is better and expiate my oath.’ ” – Prophet Muhammad, the Koran, Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 67, Number 427
Taqiyya and Kitman, or ‘holy hypocrisy’, has been diffused throughout Arabic culture for over fourteen hundred years since it was developed by Shiites as a means of defense and concealment of beliefs against Sunni unbelievers. As the Prophet said: ‘he who keeps secrets shall soon attain his objectives.’
The skillful use of Taqiyya and Kitman [Kitman, a more subtle version of Taqiyya, whereby the Koran teaches a believer to tell infidels only a part of the truth, with “mental reservation”, justifying the omission of the rest of the truth] was often a matter of life and death against enemies; it is also a matter of life and death to many contemporary Islamic terrorists. As so often in the history of Islam, a theological doctrine became operational.
During the Spanish inquisition, Sunni Moriscos attended mass and returned home to wash their hands of the ‘holy water’. In operational terms, Taqiyya and Kitman allowed the ‘mujahadeen ‘ to assume whatever identity was necessary to fulfill their mission; they had doctrinal and theological and later jurisprudential sanction to pretend to be Jews or Christians to gain access to Christian and Jewish targets: ‘the mujahadeen can take the shape of the enemy’. According to Christian ethics lying is a sin; In Islamic jurisprudence and theology, the use of Taqiyya against the unbelievers is regarded as a virtue and a religious duty.
Like many Islamic concepts Taqiyya and Kitman were formed within the context of the Arab-Islamic matrix of tribalism, expansionary warfare and conflict. Taqiyya has been used by Muslims since the 7th century to confuse and split ‘the enemy’. A favored tactic was ‘deceptive triangulation’; to persuade the enemy that jihad was not aimed at them but at another enemy. Another tactic was to deny that there was jihad at all. The fate for such faulty assessments by the target was death. Donald Hudson ~ danielpipes.org
Muslims are harsh against the unbelievers, merciful only to one another. – Koran 48:25
“They [the Jews] are the heirs of Hell…. They will spare no pains to corrupt you. They desire nothing but your ruin. Their hatred is clear from what they say … When evil befalls you they rejoice.” Ibid. – Koran: Surah 111, v. 117-120
In truth the disbelievers [non-Muslims] are an open enemy to you. – Koran: Surah IV, v. 101
Lying and cheating in the Arab world is not really a moral matter but a method of safeguarding honor and status, avoiding shame, and at all times exploiting possibilities, for those with the wits for it, deftly and expeditiously to convert shame into honor on their own account and vice versa for their opponents. If honor so demands, lies and cheating may become absolute imperatives.” David Pryce-Jones, “The Closed Circle” An interpretation of the Arabs, p4
Muhammad is Allah’s apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. Through them, Allah seeks to enrage the unbelievers*. – Koran 48:29
He who keeps secrets shall soon attain his objectives. – Koran 20:8
Think about it. We really know so little about the real Barrack Obama and his intentions. Would those secrets be hiding behind all those smiles?
There is something not right about Obama’s lip service to the importance of job creation versus what he is actually (not) doing about it.
2009’s nearly one trillion dollar stimulus bill as good as ignored the swelling lists of the newly unemployed. As a back-burner issue there was a lame stab at job creation by concentrating on short term construction contracts that ignored floundering small businesses. Ironically, construction unemployment levels swelled to a record 19% by the end of 2009.
It turns out that the only area of notable job growth has turned out to be a cause for alarm for the average, free-thinking entrepreneurial American.
“The era of big government has returned with a vengeance, in the form of the largest federal work force in modern history.
The Obama administration says the government will grow to 2.15 million employees this year, topping 2 million for the first time since President Clinton declared that “the era of big government is over” and joined forces with a Republican-led Congress in the 1990s to pare back the federal work force.
Most of the increases are on the civilian side, which will grow by 153,000workers, to 1.43 million people, in fiscal 2010.”
When is anyone going to notice that a key component of the Obama Administration and its progressive members’ plan to scrape every citizen under it’s umbrella of power is to systematically focus on growing the government’s work force, thereby creating a new and dominant worker force, held captive and subject to it’s progressive master’s socialist ideology.
This orchestrated exodus of patiently shepherding the masses into the progressive camp is not new methodology. We see it at work with the corrupted unions, most recently with the check card issue. But nowhere has progressive ideology been flourishing more than in our education system. Millions of young formative minds pour into their cauldron each year, yearning to be filled with ideas and information – the ultimate captive audience for revisionist history and progressive ideology. Additionally, with their children spending out-of-school time in a succession of parent-less situations like childcare and extended school-day programs, weary and out-of-touch parents’ ability to temper the influence of the daily assault of the NEA’s progressive agenda has been severely impeded. Unless much more is done to examine and expose the deliberate and systematic crushing of the principles that this country was founded on we will continue to be led down the path to communism by the progressive movement.
To facilitate the mass migration of America’s workers from the private sector into government service the Obama Administration is adding further tax burdens to middle class individuals.
“NEW YORK (Reuters.com) –The Obama administration’s plan to cut more than $1 trillion from the deficit over the next decade relies heavily on so-called backdoor tax increases that will result in a bigger tax bill for middle-class families.In the 2010 budget tabled by President Barack Obama on Monday, the White House wants to let billions of dollars in tax breaks expire by the end of the year — effectively a tax hike by stealth.
While the administration is focusing its proposal on eliminating tax breaks for individuals who earn $250,000 a year or more, middle-class families will face a slew of these backdoor increases.”
The goverment is also dragging it’s heels on any business growth measures for small businesses, as illustrated by President Obama’s anemic announcement during the State of the Union calling for Jobs Bill and tax credits for small business hires. It turns out the Jobs (Stimulus) Bill will cost a head-scratching $33 billion dollars and there is no precedent that it will work. What will work is what has always worked in the past – make the temporary tax cuts of 2001 and 2003–now set to expire in 2011–permanent. Then small business owners can make plans and decisions can be made with an eye toward the future. The cut will reduce income tax rates across the board compared to current law. It would give the private sector maximum predictability as it decides how to best spend its recovered income.
“Just as we cut taxes for families and small businesses, we need to cut them for corporations as well, from 35 percent to 25 percent. And we shouldn’t be afraid to say so. Our corporate tax rate is one of the highest in the world, driving investment and jobs overseas. Lowering this key rate will unlock trillions of dollars to be invested in America instead of abroad.
And rather than giving large companies loopholes and targeted tax benefits–which only encourage them to spend money on the lobbyists who secure such goodies–Congress should get out of the business of picking winners and losers in the market and simply cut everyone’s taxes and let the best company win. My plan will make businesses compete for consumers, not Congressmen.
To further simplify and improve the code, our plan would also:
- permanently repeal the alternative minimum tax once and for all;
- permanently maintain the capital gains and dividends taxes at 15 percent;
- permanently kill the Death Tax for estates under $5 million, and cut the tax rate to 15 percent for those above;
- permanently extend the $1,000-per-child tax credit;
- permanently repeal the marriage tax penalty;
- permanently limit itemized deductions to home mortgage interest and charitable contributions.
The Heritage Center for Data Analysis widely respected economic forecasting model projects this plan would create nearly 500,000 jobs this year, 1.3 million next year, 7.5 million by 2013, and a total of nearly 18 million jobs over the next decade.
UPDATE: MAY 2010
Unemployment – 9.7% (95% are GOVERNMENT JOBS)
… of the 95% government jobs most are temporary jobs working for the US Census Bureau … there are many claims that those figures are inflated since workers are laid off at the end of a 5 hour shift, then rehired the next day which counts as a new job.”“What they do is hire you, they train you like a few weeks — 35, 40 hours of training and give you six hours of productive work and lay you off.” a former Census named “Maria” tells FOX News. “Maria” further explains they rehire you so it counts as a new job.”
UPDATE: April 1 2011
If you want to understand better why so many states—from New York to Wisconsin to California—are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.
It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees. Is it any wonder that so many states and cities cannot pay their bills?
Every state in America today except for two—Indiana and Wisconsin—has more government workers on the payroll than people manufacturing industrial goods. Consider California, which has the highest budget deficit in the history of the states. The not-so Golden State now has an incredible 2.4 million government employees—twice as many as people at work in manufacturing. New Jersey has just under two-and-a-half as many government employees as manufacturers. Florida’s ratio is more than 3 to 1. So is New York’s.
Even Michigan, at one time the auto capital of the world, and Pennsylvania, once the steel capital, have more government bureaucrats than people making things. The leaders in government hiring are Wyoming and New Mexico, which have hired more than six government workers for every manufacturing worker.

Item: I wonder if this major story on recent fossil fuel extraction technology breakthroughs that literally turns our current fuel crisis on its head will make the popular print and electronic media headlines.
Item: There have also been an increasing number of scientific news reports that there are virtually no sunspots on the sun at this time. Sunspots=earth heating up. No sunspots=earth cooling down. So, contrary to the the global warming alarmists’ theory that the earth is heating up, scientific evidence is pointing to a mini ice age within the couple of decades.
“There is an 11-year cycle (about) in sunspots. When spots are plentiful, the sun’s energy is stronger, and there is a tendency for Earth’s temperatures to increase. During the low point there are few sunspots, and temperatures are more likely to drop. We have been in a solar minimum for more than a year. NASA and other agencies predicted that sunspot numbers would be increasing by now, but they are not. According to NASA, we are seeing:
• The lowest sustained solar radio flux since the F10.7 proxy was created in 1947;
• Solar wind is the lowest observed since the beginning of the space age;
• The solar wind magnetic field 36 percent weaker than during the minimum of Solar Cycle 23;
• Effectively no sunspots;
• Cosmic rays at near record-high levels.
Item: Then there is the classic on-air debate between global warming alarmist scientist Bill Nye and the global warming skeptic, meteorologist Joe Bastardi:
BILL O’REILLY, HOST: Factor follow-up segment tonight, another global warming study debunked in the journal Nature Geoscience. The study was printed that showed the ocean is rising because of global warming. Well, now the magazine says sorry, the study was flawed. Just another in a long line of global warming problems including the resignation last week of the U.N. global warming guy. Joining us from Los Angeles Bill Nye the science guy who believes in manmade global warming. And from State College, Pennsylvania, Accuweather meteorologist Joe Bastardi who is skeptical. So Joe, give me your best shot. Why are you dubious about this global warming business?
JOE BASTARDI: Well first of all, let’s take a look at what happened this winter because there are a lot of people trying to now say that all the cold and snow that we had was because of global warming. This was our forecast issued in July and then I reissued it again in October. Notice the cold and snow in the mid-Atlantic states, snow down here in Texas, warm and dry up here. Wet in California. Now, how did I come up with that? Was it global warming? No. We have an El Nino and a state of the ocean in the Pacific similar to the 60s and 70s when Bill O’Reilly was growing up and there was all that snow. The solar cycles are doing something that is reminiscent to colder times. And amazingly, amazingly, the very thing that John Holdren opined on last year, blasting soot into the high altitudes over top of the Artic actually happened naturally with volcanic activity last year led to a lot of blocking over the polls [sic] this year.
O’REILLY: So, once again, you have a meteorological explanation for what happened.
BASTARDI: Oh yes.
O’REILLY: Bill, why do you believe, and Joe doesn’t believe in manmade global warming. Why do you believe in it?
BILL NYE: Well, the evidence is overwhelming. Do you agree, Joe, that in 1750 the world’s carbon dioxide was about 280 parts per million? Do you agree with that?
BASTARDI: Bill, you don’t want to go here, do you know why? Because I’m going to show the CO2 correlation.
NYE: Do you agree?
BASTARDI: Yes. I also agree.
O’REILLY: Wait, Joe. Wait. Let him make his point and you can reply. Go ahead, Bill.
NYE: Do you agree that the planet Venus is warm because it has a lot of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere? When I say warm, enough to melt lead on its surface? Do you agree with that?
BASTARDI: I don’t believe we have the proper measurements of Venus from over 10 billion years ago. So I can’t tell the relationship with the Earth.
O’REILLY: Go ahead, Bill.
NYE: I think you are throwing a red herring in there.
BASTARDI: Oh I am? I wasn’t around the time of Creation.
NYE: This is the carbon dioxide in 1750 in parts per million as represented by fountain pen ink. This is it today. Even though it’s a very, very small fraction, four hundreds of a percent, it’s still quite noticeable and it affects the world’s climate. About your explanation with volcanoes, you know, this is a study done by the IPCC, and this is a timeline and it depicts volcanic activity. And one of the greatest revelations behind casting where they showed that there was a correlation between volcanic eruptions and the Earth’s cooling because particulate matter gets high in the atmosphere. Well, it’s only true of volcanoes near the equator. Mt. St. Helens had hardly any effect at all. And you can see when you extract the data from this trend, you extract trend from this data, the world is getting warmer. It’s continually getting warmer. And these data are so compelling that they overwhelm any effect that has, that might have come from this winter.
O’Reilly: Alright, Joe. You reply.
NYE: Sort of nothing to do with it.
BASTARDI: That’s simply not true, Bill. When you blast SO2 into the atmosphere over top of the Arctic, what happens is it absorbs sunlight warms the stratosphere which depresses the troposphere underneath and cools the troposphere. That can be documented from what happened back in 1912 if you went back and looked at the following winters. But look at this.
O’REILLY: Wait, wait, wait, Bill. Let Joe go.
BASTARDI: You want to bring up the CO2 argument. Why don’t we just look at the sun spots back here, back in 1750 and notice that they have been coming up and along with it the temperatures. Basically it comes down to this. If you you look at the strength of correlation to warming, and this is courtesy of meteorologist Joe D’Aleo. CO2 since 1895, you can see the .43, the sun .57, the oceans .85. But since 1998, CO2 is going next to nothing because the Earth’s temperature is flat lining and CO2 is coming up. So what you have to believe, folks, is this that the sun, plus the oceans, plus the volcanic activity plus natural reversal has less effect than the yearly human contribution equal to the width of a hair on a one kilometer bridge of a trace gas needed for life. So, if you want to believe that you can go ahead and believe that. Seems kind of hard to.
O’REILLY: All right, Bill.
NYE: Actually Joe, Mr. Bastardi, the last 10 years are the warmest decade on record.
BASTARDI: Sure, measuring with satellites.
NYE: 1998 was an especially warm year. 1998 was an especially warm year as was 2006. Now, what’s happened is you showed back in September on this program this graph. And it starts around here 2001 and the idea is that it shows the world cooling off. Well, actually, it’s weighted because of the especially warm 1998. When you extract the data as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change…
BASTARDI: Exactly right.
NYE: …has, you see it go up and down but the trend is up. Now, what, here is the question for you, Mr. O’Reilly for Mr. Bastardi: in whose best interest is this? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change does these studies, they argue about it, that’s what ClimateGate was about. The one guy called the other guy an idiot. One guy calls his method no good. The other guy says his method is really good. But the world is getting warmer. Carbon dioxide is a very strong greenhouse gas. It has a very long residence time in the atmosphere. It is making the world warmer. Along with methane and other human activities. In whose best interest is it to deny this stuff?
O’REILLY: Let me give Joe the last word.
BASTARDI: Alright, Bill. How are you measuring, when measuring temperatures since the satellite era began in the late 70s at the end of the last what we call the cold PDO. And what I want to show you here real quick, folks.
NYE: Pacific Decadal Oscillation.
O’REILLY: Let him finish.
BASTARDI: The Pacific Decadal Oscillation. If we take a look at this right back here, we see that during the 70s here, and you can see the Time magazine from late 70s we were in a cold PDO. We have been warming it up. We are now turning colder. And the fact of the matter is that if I am right, and this is the greatest debate ever, Bill Nye, the greatest lab experiment ever. If I’m right, the reversals will lead to a degree to a degree and a half cooling. If you are right, they are not. But what are we worried about right now? What we have to look at is the next 20 or 30 years.
To be sure, the cooling now is happening faster than it should because it got so warm in the first place via the super nino of 97-98. The last warm cycle reached its peak in the late 50s when we actually surfaced submarines at the north pole in 1959… IN MARCH! I often wonder what global temps would have been measured at then if we had the ways of measuring we do now. The fact that there was so much “shock” at some of the revelations that showed up on the O’Reilly Factor is because people are refusing to understand that so far, this has been a case of been there, done that.
One can pull out as many cases of bad weather in the 30s, 40s and 50s as they can now. I still believe the 3 greatest examples of how bad a hurricane can get in relation to latitude are the 1938 hurricane with 186 mph wind gusts at Blue Hill Mass, the 1944 hurricane that destroyed the Atlantic City boardwalk, and Hurricane Donna which gave hurricane force winds to every state from Florida to Maine. The 1944 hurricane had winds 600 miles in diameter and stripped 50% of the screws from a recon plane into it.
Unlike many people, I am well acquainted and respect the co2 warming idea, but in its pure form, which actually allows for the cooling coming now! There in lies the problem. We can’t know till after the period that is coming up through 2030 whether co2 is really a player or not. The threat of not only oceanic cycles cooling the earth, but the suns lack of intensity and increased volcanic and seismic activity could mean that as some papers in the early 90s (and dismissed by many) opined we would be as cold as back in the early 1800s. What you see now may just be the beginning. One thing we do know, that we should be skeptical of any future event, no matter what we believe.
Naturally occurring Mini Ice Age … a more likely future
I was thwarted from taking my treasured walk in our nearby public gardens on this breathtakingly beautiful Sunday because, well, it was too incredibly beautiful out today. There were so many cars waiting for parking spaces, I decided to make lemonade out of my forced change of plans by picking up ingredients for a delicious stir-fry my daughter concocted recently that we just cannot get enough of. My exercise would have to be on the treadmill after dinner. No problem. That’s why I got the treadmill, for times like this. No more excuses…
Well, after dinner I am pounding away at 3.8 on the treadmill and channel surfing. The channel lands on CSPAN-2’s Book TV which is airing a taped broadcast from 9/10 featuring conservative author Norman Podhoretz speaking before a small group of people at The Harvard Club about his latest book, Why are Jews Liberal?
This caught my attention because I admire and respect Mr. Podhoretz for the patriot and scholar I believe he is. In addition, I myself have wondered before why so many Jews are liberal (just like I wonder why so many of my fellow Catholics are liberal). I’ve had my own theories as to why, and after listening to this scholar expand on them so succinctly in an hour’s time, my perspective on the subject was broadened further.
He spoke of how non-Jewish liberals are often non-supportive of Jewish causes to the point of ofttimes being anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist. Ironically, the groups that liberal Jews do not trust – right wing evangelicals, Catholics and conservatives – are the ones who support Jewish causes, including the Jewish state, in overwhelming numbers.
Based on this premise, Mr. Podhoretz presents a confounding statistic of how, other than the black vote in the 2008 election, of which 95% voted for Barack Obama, the next largest voting block, at 75%! (more than Hispanics, Muslims, Catholics, women or other classically ‘liberal’ groups), were Jews.
The answer to the book’s title is complicated and resides in liberal Jews’ misguided interpretation of their history and religious beliefs. Mr. Podhoretz believes that the Jews’ classic distrust of the ‘right’ wing, rooted in historical perspective, is invalid due to the reality of subsequent world events. To make his point that liberal Jews’ thinking is wrongly stuck in time by refusing to see how groups of people can and do profoundly change, he used the analogy of the “Guns of Singapore”. The battle of Singapore was lost when they refused to listen to reliable intelligence and adjust their war strategy accordingly. Instead, based solely on previous battle successes they decided to aim their guns southward, in the same direction as they had in the last war. Their decision resulted in a disastrous defeat when the Japanese overwhelmed and defeated them from the north.
Mr. Podhoretz explains how many liberal Jews tend to believe that evangelical Christians do not like them because there are passages of the Bible that speak of salvation only through Christ. Mr. Podhoretz would like liberal Jews to also know that, more importantly, in Genesis 9:6 God tells all of us that the Jews are “God’s chosen people…blessed to God above all people…”. Liberal Jews need to open their eyes and see that it is conservatives, Catholic and evangelicals who are the ones who truly support them.
Mr. Podoretz’s said that it is his hope that over the next few years that Jews who voted for Barack Obama will have ‘buyer’s remorse’, and will see him for the ‘false messiah’ that he so apparently is.
Congressman Mike Pence, a true CONSERVATIVE, American patriot, friend of Israel, and a CHRISTIAN asks President Obama (a Progressive Liberal) whose side he is on?
As an amateur conservationist, naturalist and environmentalist I live my life in relative simplicity, and consciously keep my consumption of products and goods at a low level. I enjoy the natural world on many levels, from hiking to gardening; I promote kindness to animals; I’ve gone vegan – this, and more, places me on those lists without being labeled a tree-hugging wacko. Since I strive to live by the credo ‘everything good within reason’, this especially holds true in the area of environmentalism. For me, to be an environmentalist does not mean that I need to believe in every cause that every environmentalist puts forth. Like all of life’s big challenges, I want to be able to choose which mountain to die on.
Saving the delta smelt is not one of those mountains. During California’s recent three year drought in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta, instead of the state looking for ways to help suffering farmers who were losing farms and facing upwards of 40% unemployment, the Endangered Species Committee, also known as the “God Squad,” was allowed to impose ‘water curbs”, thereby reducing flow from pumping stations to parched agricultural areas. These measures were implemented to save the delta smelt, a small fish who they believed was endangered from being caught and killed in the irrigation pumping stations.
Since then, The Pacific Legal Foundation has petitioned the governator to remove the water curbs. However, like most issues, it’s complicated, with some wondering whether the smelt is the real culprit leading to the loss of water in the area; that perhaps the present problems would be the same from just the three-year drought alone; or, that farmers should simply learn to adapt to changes in their environment. In any case, for California, a state whose financial crisis is reaching the breaking point, the delta smelt issue is just one more example of how over regulation can have disastrous outcomes for all.
So, do we save a little fish or save the livelihood and homes of thousands of farmers? Though a complicated issue, the decision is clear. Common sense and reason must prevail. For some of you, please do not tell me you care about these fish as you – yes, you meat-eating hypocrites – bite down on your flesh sandwich in one hand and hold up your Save the Planet placard with the other. Don’t screech about the loss of these fish while millions of factory farmed chickens, pigs, sheep and cows are treated cruelly and butchered in appalling manners each minute of every day. And isn’t it ironic that the waste from these same factory farmed animals is the leading contributor to ground water pollution in the world? Perhaps this is the mountain you should make your stand on.
